Nuisance gulls at Bookers/Makro wholesale food site

Permanent bird control solution for Bookers/Makro

Being a wholesale supplier of food goods and located close to the seaside, a permanent bird control solution was required. Bookers/Makro approached NBC Environment, who surveyed the site and advised the use of bird netting to prevent the gulls gaining access. The roofs had restricted access and an abundance of skylights which made proofing difficult. In addition, access to the roof was required for any future works.

Project overview

Bookers/Makro at Llandudno junction had suffered from colony of nesting gulls for a number of years. The gulls’ nesting materials also blocked rain water gullies and caused continual flooding of the internal building.

In 2016, closure of the store, stock damage and building repairs cost the company over £30k.

Our solution

NBC installed a translucent 75mm net suspended over roof structure at 2m to allow future access to roof for contractors.

Bird proofing has many benefits to solving bird issues such as:

  • Netting is environmentally friendly as birds cannot get caught and trapped in the net
  • Causes minimal impact to buildings
  • Reduces cleaning and maintenance costs due to no more bird fouling
  • The netting is very versatile and can be used across a vast area

Our client commented:

“NBC are the best contractors we have ever had on site. Daily meetings and toolbox talks kept everyone updated. They did exactly what they said they would daily and completed works a week ahead of schedule.”
