Corvids causing havoc at Bristol Hospital: Bouygues E&S Solutions Limited

Birds had started dropping stones over the edge of the building and smashing window panes at Bristol Hospital risking safety to staff and visitors and causing expense in replacing window panes.

Bouygues E&S Solutions Limited were already a client and chose NBC Environment as the specialist supplier business to support them with their project as we could;

Support at the proposed installation of the client preferred bird deterrent measures;

The first aimed to prevent nuisance birds, in this case Corvids from alighting the leading edges of the upper areas of the hospital.

The second to ensure nuisance birds are restricted from dropping pebble ballast over the edges of the hospital at height, which was causing a serious health and safety risk to hospital staff, patients and members of the public below.

The third to ensure nuisance birds are restricted from dropping pebble ballast over the edges of the hospital at height, which was causing considerable damage by smashing the very expensive glass windowpanes.

Project overview

NBC’s objectives were to protect wildlife balanced with the need to support operations by;

  • Providing the client with a full detailed survey inspection report and installed a suitable plan of works.
  • Carrying out the proposed program of works onsite to support with species identified (Carrion crow – Corvus Corone & Rook – Corvus Frugilegus) to ensure compliance with the Wildlife & Countryside Act.
  • Working safely on a huge complex with the project being carried out at height and outside.

Our solution

NBC were able to demonstrate specialist capability with robust risk assessments and method statements, which included the listing of all materials to be used on the project.

A specialist team from NBC Environment Bristol pest control branch supported the client by carrying out a specialist bird deterrent optical gel installation program of works throughout the required ledges of the hospital complex areas, with the safe cleaning and sanitising of any contaminated areas before the install.

The project has ensured the risks of ballast pebbles being dropped over the sides of the building were reduced that the risks to human health and safety were reduced. This also assisted in reducing the risks of very expensive window placement.
