Preventing Gulls Nesting on Roof

Our client, a large University, had a project to renew the roofing on one of their main buildings this summer. The site is across the road from the sea and has a large population of gulls. The gulls have been nesting on this roof for as long as anyone can remember.

Under the GL41 General Licence the gulls can not be disturbed once they begin to nest, this would completely stop this awaited roof renewal, possibly leading to further water ingress and damage to the building, alongside the issues that would be experienced carrying out these works in the winter months with inclement weather.

In January 2023, the university approached us to find a solution that would mitigate the gulls this summer allowing the roofing project to continue unhindered.

Our Solution

NBC’s solution was to deny all access to these roof areas by installing a 75mm Gull Net. This net has now enclosed all roofs which will allow the works to commence in the Summer without the concerns of nesting gulls, being disturbed and violating the GL41Licence with the risk of litigation.
