Father & son team send pigeons sky high for Monarch

Nuisance pigeons at Monarch Aircraft Engineering hangar

A new 110,000 sq. ft hangar is the home of Monarch Aircraft Engineering at Birmingham Airport and formerly home to nuisance pigeons which were causing issues at the site, prior to the official opening. It was essential for Monarch to remove the pigeons from the hangar to eliminate the risk from the bird guano which would otherwise be a health and safety hazard to the staff.

Project overview

Eager to resolve their pesky pigeon problems, Monarch called in the expertise of NBC Bird & Pest Solutions, the UK’s leading bird control experts to carry out its falconry response services.

Our solution

Harriet, a Harris Hawk from our NBC Birmingham bird control team was once again deployed on a mission this morning with one of our expert falconers, Lee Rees, (who is the son of NBC Midlands branch Area Manager Graham Rees) and this time they landed themselves an interview on national BBC Breakfast News at the hangar opening event.

Eager to resolve their pesky pigeon problems, Monarch called in the expertise of NBC Bird & Pest Solutions, the UK’s leading bird control experts to carry out its falconry response services.

The falconry programme included:

  • Intensive bird control for 4 weeks to reduce the ‘pressure’ of the initial pigeon infestation
  • Pigeon guano (faeces) cleaning and removal, as required
  • A regular falconry programme to prevent re-occupation

The benefits of the bird prevention services NBC provide ensure:

  • Monarch were able to complete their successful opening of a new hangar, on-time and within budget
  • Elimination of the Health & Safety risk from disease caused by pigeon droppings
  • The site will be protected for the future from all bird species and problems
  • Monarch will benefit from a reduced risk of higher maintenance costs from pests

Monarch Airlines invited NBC back for the official opening of the new facility, where the local and national media were in attendance.  Lee and Harriet took the opportunity to explain to BBC Breakfast News viewers about the bird deterrent work that they carry out and how it is a natural & ethical method of bird control.

It was essential for Monarch to remove the pigeons from the hangar to eliminate the risk from the bird guano which would otherwise be a health and safety hazard to the staff.  The successful work has now led to NBC Midlands branch surveyor David Warren being able to agree an annual contract with Monarch to continue providing its falconry response services.
