Problem Dormouse Mitigation

Prior to engineering investigation works on the M5, Blackdown Environmental were instructed by Skanska on behalf of the Highways Agency to assist in the delivery of ecological consultancy services relating to engineering investigation works adjacent to the northbound hard shoulder of the M5 in Devon. Works required the removal of vegetation prior to Geotechnical Investigations in areas of seepage and soft ground on motorway embankments.

Project Overview

Prior to engineering investigation works on the M5, Blackdown Environmental were contracted to provide ecological consultancy services specifically related to dormice.

The Solution

Blackdown Environmental undertook a dormouse nest tube survey to assist the scheme’s Environmental Assessment. Dormice and dormouse nests were identified and Blackdown’s Ecologists prepared the detailed method statements and Work Schedule associated with a European Protected Species Licence (EPSL) application, subsequently granted by Natural England.

These works ensured that the project complied with wildlife legislation and provided mitigation to ensure the favourable conservation status of dormice at the site. Prior to the commencement of works Blackdown Environmental installed wooden nest boxes as part of the detailed mitigation scheme and acted as Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) during vegetation removal.
