Bats

Blackdown

There are 18 species of bats in the UK, 17 of which are known to breed here. All bat species are protected and often need to be considered during development projects. Blackdown Environmental are experienced in undertaking assessments of bat species across the UK.

Overview

All UK bat species are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations (2010). Assessments of bat species are frequently required as part of planning applications, whether it is with regard to understanding their roosting requirements or assessing their use of a site with regards foraging areas and flight routes.

Commoner species of bats include:

  • Brown long-eared bat
  • Pipistrelle
  • Serotine
  • Noctule Bat
  • Daubenton’s Bats

Habitat:

Bats use hunting grounds or foraging habitats to find food and to travel between roosts. Habitat choice is species specific some prefer being near water, others prefer woodlands or glassland. In urban environments, bats often roost in buildings, but they forage in green spaces like gardens, allotments, parks and ponds. Potential roosts including old barns, country estates, large urban housing schemes, bridges and trees.
