NBC Enfield & Watford carried out specialist guano cleaning (bird poo removal) and pest control at Croxley Great Barn in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.
Due to the extent of the pigeon poo problem and associated Health and Safety risks of disease, slipping hazards and damage to the historical building, the local NBC Area manager got straight to work and removed a substantial amount of the bird mess from the site.
The medieval monastic barn is of significant historical value dating back to 1397 and believed to have been built for Abbot John Moote of St Albans Abbey. The barn has a wooden cathedral look that has remained unchanged for some 700 years. Our Area manager was asked to carry out the specialist guano cleaning in preparation for vital maintenance and repairs carried out by a summer work party from SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings).
Monitoring of rodents at the site is on-going, using non toxic techniques due to the presence of Bats and Barn Owls. NBC is working closely with Oxley Conservation who are overseeing the project, to ensure that the resident wildlife is protected during works carried out to the barn.
